The great thing about travelling by bike is that you get to see so much more than you do in a car. If you want to stop and take in the views, well, no problem. There is a great deal to see around Llandrindod Wells, and some great roads from which to see it. Hills, valleys and spectacular vistas reward the rider in so many places around Powys.
Basing a tour of the area at Greylands Guest House is a great idea. Not only will you have comfortable, friendly accommodation, starting the day with a good breakfast to keep you going, but also Tony is full of local knowledge which he is happy to share when planning your routes. This is a real short cut to finding just the sort of roads that you are looking for.
Keep your bike under cover too
There is a garage available for bikers to store your pride and joy overnight, out of the weather and in the dry. You can get a good night's rest and so can your bike. The roads here are so inviting, you won't want to be stopping during the day, so a good rest is essential.
This is where the websmith butts in: As a biker myself, I can thoroughly recommend the Lladrindod Wells to Newtown road. Rumour has it that there are 365 bends, one for each day of the year. I have never counted them as I am always too busy having fun on my FireBlade for that. What I can say is that there are plenty of them from the fast and sweeping to the eye-bulging braking types. Lovely!
Background
The name Builth, in Welsh Buallt or perhaps Buellt, is older than the town to which it now refers. Buallt/Buellt originally applied to the Cantref or Hundred, an area within the old Welsh administrative system. The Cantref of Buallt/Buellt was an area of land between the rivers Wye and Tywi and north of a line drawn roughly between Erwood and Llanwrtyd, covering an area of some 174 miles. It has long been thought the name of the Cantref, and later the town, came from the Welsh words 'Bu' and 'Allt', and could be translated as 'The Wild Ox of the Wooded Slope'. Roman remains have been found in the surrounding area (the Roman fort at Beulah, 8 miles to the west no evidence has yet been found in Builth Wells itself to prove Roman habitation. The origin of the town dates with certainty from Norman times with the construction of the timber Motte and Bailey castle by Philip de Braose. The castle commanded the ancient crossing of the Wye, and as a result controlled the route to the south which ran over the Eppynt Mountains towards Brecon; it also guarded the entrance to the valley of the Irfon which gave access to the west.

The town is host to the Royal Welsh Showground where many events take place regularly. Most notable of these is the Royal Welsh Show every July, which attracts a quarter of a million visitors regularly. Needless to say, accommodation over the show period is at a premium, so if you would like to stay at Greylands for the show, early booking is recommended.
